Environment Activities
To achieve our environmental objectives, ScanCom combines strategic initiatives with specific targeted requirements and activities:
Every timber purchase order specifies that our contract manufacturers must use timber sold to them by ScanCom, so that we can completely control the timber input into the products we buy.
All contracts with furniture suppliers dictate that they must fully comply with our strict timber origin and chain of custody requirements.
Standard operating practice states: “Any timber or product that cannot be traced back to a forest that meets the ScanCom criteria through a clear chain of custody will be rejected.”
The design brief of our products includes the requirement to ensure maximum utilisation of scarce resources and the minimisation of waste.
We have an active programme to raise awareness among our business partners and other stakeholders including governments, NGOs and end-consumers. The program includes participation in workshops and media events, and correspondence with stakeholders.
We make our in-house technical expertise available to supply chain partners through technical support. We offer direct training, expert consultants and chain of custody system software applications. We also periodically conduct internal audits for feedback on progress.
Through our partnerships with WWF and Global Forestry Services, we provide technical support to improve the management of our source forests.
By clarifying our expectations and commitments, we ensure that our operations are fully transparent, and that our partners clearly understand that ScanCom has a framework of procedures that it upholds.
