On March 31st, 2022, ScanCom was announced as a recipient of the prestigious Red Dot Award in the category for Product Design. The distinction and honour have been awarded to the Stream Chair Platform; a unique plastic shell chair that has been designed specifically with the use of recycled plastic material in mind.

Created by ScanCom’s Head of Plastic Development, Inbal Kahaner, the chair is designed with inspiration from the sea and seashores, with the pattern handcrafted to mimic the waves of the ocean and the shape of a seashell picked up from a walk on the beach. Additionally, the chair platform is uniquely distinguished by the multiple options for legs and frames that are available for it – in a multitude of materials –, allowing for excellent flexibility and adaptability to any taste or style.

ScanCom Group CBDO, Lars Rudkjoebing, shares the following on the accolade: “There is no doubt that this is a great milestone for ScanCom as a Group, and for our dedicated design and development teams. We have a clear strategy that involve a dedication and care for ‘Design & Innovation’, and this award is a solid indicator of our direction being the right one – and that we are good at what we do in that area of our operations.”

The ScanCom Group operates with three distinct areas of focus: Design & Innovation, Sustainability & CSR, and Operational Excellence; these always aligned with the company motto and principle of ‘Doing Business the Right Way’.

Uncompromised Dedication

“With this award, we are confirmed that we are able to build on existing, solid principles in our material sourcing and development approach, and put all our learnings and experiences into a ‘practical’ product that remains faithful to this foundation.” Lars Rudkjoebing finishes.

“To receive this Award means so much to me.” Inbal Kahaner explains, before continuing: “As a designer, having the faith and belief in taking different directions and creating something that push the existing status quo is very important; and the journey of turning trash into something long lasting that adds comfort and style is a powerful motivator. Equally, it is important to work with a company that supports and understands the value and need of this approach.”

Speaking on the competition for the 2022 Red Dot Awards, Professor Dr. Peter Zec - Red Dot CEO and Founder -, expressed: “In this year of the competition, I have been particularly struck by the exceptional creativity shown by the award-winning products. It is really impressive and praiseworthy that there are still designs out there that can surprise us with their form and functionality. This makes it clear that design cannot be restricted or brought to a standstill by unfavourable circumstances. On the contrary: more and more new ideas and creations emerge, and futuristic techniques are developed. The fact that the quality of these products equals their level of innovation makes them well-deserved winners in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022.“

For ScanCom, the comment on not allowing difficult circumstances and situations to bring our commitment to a standstill rings truer than ever, and the award strongly supports the work of the company on the key areas of both Design & Innovation and Sustainability & CSR through the design being focused on – and particularly suited to – incorporating sustainable and recycled materials.

The Official Award Ceremony will be held in Essen, Germany, on June 20th, 2022. This is part of the Red Dot Design Week, running from June 20th to June 24th; which will include an online exhibition of the award winners.

About the Red Dot

The Red Dot Design Award looks back on a history of more than 60 years: in 1955, a jury met for the first time to evaluate the best designs of the time. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO, Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, developed the name and the brand of the award to what we recognize today. In 1993, a further separate discipline for communication design was introduced; followed in 2005 by another one for prototypes and concepts.

The Red Dot stands for belonging to the best in design and business. The international design competition, the “Red Dot Design Award” is aimed at all those who would like to distinguish their business activities through design. The distinction is based on the principle of selection and presentation, with each excellent design selected by a competent jury of experts in areas of product design, communication design, and design concepts.
